Mercat d’Horta

The proposal transforms Horta Market into an open and permeable civic device, fully integrated into its urban context. The project reinterprets the market as a public square, where architecture and city merge through continuity, transparency and social exchange.

By freeing the ground floor and reorganising circulation, the building becomes a porous volume that activates its surroundings and strengthens pedestrian connections between adjacent streets. The market is conceived not only as a commercial space, but as a social catalyst that extends public life into the building and projects it back into the neighbourhood.

The section is reconfigured to optimise the existing structure and improve accessibility, daylight and cross-ventilation, while respecting the heritage framework. The market and self-service areas are clearly differentiated but functionally complementary, ensuring flexibility, efficiency and clarity of use.

As an urban strategy, the project reinforces the idea of the market as a covered public square, capable of hosting everyday activity as well as community events and collective uses. Transparency, permeability and adaptability define a building that acts as both infrastructure and civic space.

At its core, the proposal aims to revitalise the Horta neighbourhood through an architecture that is open, efficient and socially engaged, turning the market into a luminous urban landmark and a generator of local relationships.
