Transparency and permeability as social values for the new mixed-use building in the Besòs-Maresme neighborhood in Barcelona
Espècies d’Espais is a complex building that includes different types of programs: city council departments, a cinema, study rooms, social housing offices, a civic rooftop, and social organizations.
The building arises from the desire to revitalize and transform the area in which it is located, both on a social and urban level. For this reason, its clear, efficient, and compact volume is conceived as a large transparent and permeable layer. This layer simultaneously acts as the container for all the activities taking place inside the building.
It enables visual connections between the activities occurring within and the surrounding social context outside, working as a symbol of integration and openness of the neighborhood’s public and social institutions towards its citizens.
